You may be wondering why on earth as a web designer I would make a course to walk you through how to build a website. Isn’t that putting me out of business?
I’m a believer in knowing how to do the thing yourself before you pay someone to do it for you. I know that there are many stages to your business. And you can’t (or don’t) always want to just pay a designer. I also don’t believe in keeping things as exclusive for only those who can afford the high dollar price tags.
I just love a good underdog story. Have you ever heard of Rustic Cuff? It was founded by a woman named Jill Donovan in my home state of Oklahoma. She wrote a book at one point called “The Kindness Effect”. I won’t give away any of the book, because if you haven’t read it you totally should.
A few years ago, for a short time, I was part of a book club with the women in my family. Once a month we’d meet, get dinner, talk about the book and life, and enjoy each other’s company. One of the books we read was Jill Donovan’s book. My cousin decided to reach out to her and let her know we were reading the book and all about our book club. And that right there could have been the end of the story. But it wasn’t. Jill Donovan decided to gift each of us in the book club with a set of Rustic Cuff bracelets.
She didn’t have to do that. But she wanted to. (You learn more about why she does this kind of thing in her book. Again, no spoilers). So we each got a set of Rustic Cuff bracelets. Even years later I wear those bracelets and think of fond memories. And that right there is the power of being an entrepreneur. You get to decide how you want to leave your mark on this world. If you want to break the mold of your industry and do something not many do… go do it.
Which is why I had to create this course. Not for some sleezy gratification thing. But to help fellow entrepreneurs be able to make their impact on the world.

This stage is all about getting ready to build it. We’ll gather all needed elements, get design inspiration, and make a visual guide for your website. The goal here is to get ready to build your website so we can make the actual building process easier.
We’ll go over the B. of the W.E.B. Framework. This is where the magic happens and all our hard work up until now comes together. We’ll go over working with the builder tools, we’ll take care of every page of your website, and we’ll also make sure it’s nice and mobile friendly. And we’ll review it at this stage before we launch it. This is where we make sure you’re website is working at it’s best to show how unique you and your business are.
This is where we get to show off your website. We’ll put together a launch plan and get all the details finalized here. This is where we get to enjoy the hard work we put in, and showcase it. It’s time to celebrate!
This is all about where we go from here now that your website’s built. We’ll talk about what to do next. We’ll cover the all important but often overlooked website maintenance steps. We’ll even take a look at some fun tools like Heat Maps.

I know solopreneurship is hard and overwhelming, first there’s websites, then throw in email lists, digital product and course creation, and then there’s all the organization too.
When it comes to web design…. I’ve got a degree in web design… I know what they teach. You don’t need a degree. I use about a tenth of what I learned in school, and it’s things I share through my various courses. I use more of my self taught skills from years of experience in web design and running a business to know that experience does more than a fancy piece of paper can. If I can build a website and figure out how to run a business, you can too, I know it can be done.

When it comes to building a website there’s the cost of your domain purchase (typically 12 to 30 dollars), the cost of hosting (typically 50 to 150 depending on how many domains you’ll need), and the cost of how you plan to build your website. Inside the Planner I’ll share with you how you can build it for as little as 50 dollars (or even free).
Building a website is work, I won’t lie to you there. Especially if you’re new to building a website. The beauty of Web Design U is that it’s entirely self paced. My best recommendation to get through this course is to block out a section of time every week to work on this. For example, maybe you could work on this every friday from 1 to 5 pm.This is your best guarantee to get your website built. This will take time, I can’t tell you how long, every business and website is different. But what I can tell you is the more time you put in every week the faster it will go. But don’t rush this process either.
If you’re totally new to websites, that’s okay, we’ll all start somewhere. You’ll want to take your time and be sure to work along side every video. Be sure to pay attention to the WordPress Course to get comfortable with that and the first module will walk you through basic setup if you don’t have that done either.
